Over the course of the last twelve months, I have read more than 345 books.
Here I will rotate books I've read and am reading that have made a positive impact on my life.
Emotional Intelligence - Daniel Goleman
We have heard of literal intelligence, with how smart we are, but this book explores the wide ranging topic of how important it is to be intelligent with our emotions. One of my favorite excerpts from the book:
“Self-absorption in all its forms kills empathy, let alone compassion."
This book taught me about self awareness and the importance of it related to how I can be more intelligent emotionally, rather than immature, which I exhibited more times than I cared to count.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck -
We give far too much credence to what other people think - we have an addiction to the approval of others which causes our own individuality to be squelched. This book helped me see the value in living my own life - despite what the negative opinion of others may be.
Tattoos on the Heart - Father Gregory Boyle
I can't say enough about this book. A Jesuit priest goes and feels called to minister to inner city gang kids in Los Angeles. One of my favorite excerpts:
“Here is what we seek: a compassion that can stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.”
I needed to hear that there were those who wouldn't stand in judgment about what I, being poor (no matter how self imposed that was) had to carry. I needed to hear that people are there who have compassion. It was life changing.
