Never Gonna Give You Up...or Will He?
1987 was a pretty significant year for our family. My brother was born in May and as the second and definitely favorite child, he brought all sorts of cuteness into our family.
But something else happened that you may not have realized changed the entire world forever.
Someone came along with some life changing news.
Imagine looking on a match.com profile and seeing…
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
Rick Astley, an unassuming, red haired man’s man wrote the song of the century. Just to refresh your memory, and since I’m telling you in advance, you can’t count this as a rick roll…
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
But I’ve always wondered…what if Rick Astley did all of the things he said he’d never do?
What if…he really gave you up? Over something petty and dumb. Over something large and uncomfortable. What if he came to you and said he has three magical words to say…you think he’s going to drop the l bomb and he tells you he gives up. Devastating.
What if…he really let you down? Not like standing you up on a date, but really let you down. Told you he was a hunk of a man, and showed up and was…well…himself. It would be the worst first date story ever.
What if…he ran around and deserted you? What if he was a cheater? All those women on the video…what if they were his baby mamas? He tells you that he has no kids. But he really has like 23. And then he leaves as swiftly as he appeared. Desertion.
What if…he made you cry? Like all the time. Not happy tears. But sad, big puppy dog tears. Just thinking of what he told you he’d never do that he did.
What if…he said goodbye? The most dramatic goodbye. Cue the gooey break up music and he will walk away slowly, looking back, wishing, hoping, wondering if it ever could have been. Bye bye, baby.
What if…he told lies and hurt you? What if he really didn’t write the song? What if he used autotune? What if all these years some rando named Bob was his stand in and voice over? Would you feel lied to and hurt?
Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about all these things. Rick is still solidly in our corner, breaking hearts since 1987. And even though over the years, you may have given up on him, he’s never, ever gonna give you up. Even though you’ve let him down, he never will. Even though you’ve ran around and deserted him as you favorite song, you’re still his. Even though you made him cry, he won’t ever. Some of you have said goodbye to the 80’s…he hasn’t and won’t. And you’ve told lies and hurt people…open this video, it’s a training video…and rick rolled everyone you can. Rick would never do that to you.
Cheers to the best song of the 80’s (and Rick, that’s not a lie…)
